Sword Art Online Board Game: Sword of Fellows Live on Kickstarter
This project is quite exciting for many reasons.
The first one is that it implements the famous Japanese anime-manga Sword Art Online, focused on the first season. It’s an interesting and light series where some people get stuck in a Virtual Reality MMORPG, as they can`t log out from the game and the only way of doing so is to complete the game, a big challenge.
The second good reason is that the designer of the game is “Seiji Kanai”, best known in West for its megahit, “Love Letter”. At first, I thought that the game would be a mediocrity, but with “Japanime Games” and “Seiji-san” on board, I feel more excited than ever, as it combines my board game and anime passion.
The last reason that this game is quite appealing to me is its genre, an epic co-op dice-based adventure. With my love for co-ops continuously rising and with being a dice chucking master, that was the icing on the cake.
On Sword Art Online, you will take on the role of one of the six available characters, trapped in the unjust world of “Aincrad”. Each character has their own unique “Sword Skills” and other available skills that they will use throughout the game in order to overcome the “Final Battle” and escape! Then, the world is constructed, with four scenario cards at the center of the table.
The basic flow of the games goes like this:
Kirito, the anime protagonist, takes the first turn, after choosing a fitting partner for that turn.
Then, both players roll their 3 dice in a “King of Tokyo” manner, one roll and up to two rerolls. The dice may be used to trigger “Sword Skills” and deal damage or be used to launch a “Switch” attack using his partner.
The enemy may counterattack and if its life is reduced to zero, it’s defeated.
After Kirito’s turn is done, his partner will take the next one, picking a new partner, and so on.
To win the game, as mentioned above, you will have to go through the scenario cards and defeat the last one, “Final Battle”.
The game is right now live on Kickstarter and already funded. In the campaign, there are only two pledges, the basic one of $25 and the Deluxe Edition! One for $35. The Deluxe will be only available in the future in conventions and on the Japanime Games site.
