Q: Why do we use Braintree instead of Patreon?
A: One of the big reasons is we would pay an additional ~10% for processing, so that’s more of your donation that goes directly to us instead of middlemen. We use Braintree (a credit card processing company owned by PayPal and used by companies like Uber and Dropbox) which is as secure as any banking/AES+HTTPS secured site and you can setup a recurring pledge with us (or cancel or change) just as easily!

This way we also keep control of our own policies – a year or so ago they just started charging everyone more without warning and things like that make us nervous, we’d rather keep our own policy control and keep it simple.

We’re also not super keen on Patreon’s ‘pay-to-unlock’ content model, we’d rather the vast majority of our work be available even to folks who can’t afford to donate, or at least so they don’t feel pressured to do so. We do occasionally make little behind the scenes videos for our backers, but our more casual viewers would probably find these overly silly or unrelated.
